Caroline Spelman MP has lent her voice to support The National Voter Registration Drive; a party neutral campaign ran by Bite the Ballot which encourages those not already on the electoral roll to register to vote.
Historically, young people have been less likely to register to vote than those in other age groups. Research conducted by the Electoral Commission has indicated that more than 30% of 18-24 year olds are not registered to vote compared to less than 5% of those aged over 65.
In a letter to local schools, Caroline encouraged teachers to discuss the importance of voter registration with students and to explore how politics interacts across various disciplines.
Speaking about National Voter Registration Drive, Caroline commented: ‘Despite the common misconception that ‘one vote never made the difference’ I have seen time and time again how elections have been won and lost by a slim majority – including in 1997 when I won by a slender margin of 582 votes’.
‘It is important that the next generation of voters understand just how far politics extends far beyond the reaches of Whitehall and the impact local decision making has upon the character and appearance of our community’. For that reason, I would always encourage voters to consider carefully who they support with their vote, and research political parties through a variety of sources’.
To be able to participate in the local elections and Police and Crime Commissioner Elections on Thursday 5th May, residents must apply to vote in advance of the deadline on Monday 18th April 2016. To apply to register online, please visitwww.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
