Local MP Caroline Spelman has praised StreeLlink, the new help for homeless people launched this week.
StreetLInk provides a central point of contact that people who want to get help for rough sleepers can call. The number is 0300 500 0914 and there is a website: www.streetlink.org.uk
Caroline said: “At last, there is a really practical service for people who want to help rough sleepers but often don’t know what to do. The website gives a choice for those wanting help and for those who are themselves in need of it. This new service is particularly important in the winter months when rough sleepers are in danger of hypothermia.
“Very wisely, the Government has decided to provide the voluntary sector with funding to support a new approach. It offers a hand–up, rather than a handout. Members of the public can now turn their concern into practical action, and take a direct step to help vulnerable adults change their lives for the better.
“Most MPs have had to deal with homelessness as part of their work and it can be both surprising and distressing to discover the circumstances, such as divorce and unemployment that have led to someone sleeping in doorways. While numbers are low compared to many other countries, every rough sleeper is one too many.
“Volunteer helpers are welcome the day centres, hostels and homelessness charities. You can find out find out more ways of helping single, homeless people at http://www.crisis.org.uk/, where you can also donate to the Crisis at Christmas appeal.”
