Caroline Spelman, MP for Meriden constituency, joined Chelmsley Wood postman Warren Perks on his round one morning last week to experience the difficulties that postmen regularly face when delivering mail.
She said: “I saw for myself at first hand the challenges every Postie faces from dangerous dogs to irregular house numbering. The Government is consulting on how to deal with dangerous dogs on private property so that postmen and other visitors are kept safe.
“Many areas around the country have reported attacks on postmen by dogs. Over 3,100 postmen and women were attacked across the UK by dogs from April 2011 to April 2012 with incidents often increasing during school holidays. This is completely unacceptable. If you own a dog, please make sure it is kept under control so that postmen and other callers are not in danger of being bitten.
“Having done the round with Warren, I would also appeal to people to make sure that their property is clearly numbered, so that you receive your own post, not your neighbours’!”
