Caroline Spelman, MP for Meriden Constituency, has shown her support for disabled people, by attending a parliamentary reception with Paralympians Sam Ruddock and Hannah Cockcroft.
The event, held on Tuesday 22nd October, was hosted by Scope, to promote appropriate care and support for disabled people, in advance of the Government Care Bill which will enter the Commons in the Autumn.
Caroline Spelman says, “It is vital that disabled people receive the care and support they need to allow them to live independent and fulfilling lives. I support the important steps that the Government is taking to ensure that the care system works and that people can access consistent, joined up health and social care.”
The Government is undertaking a far reaching package of reform of social care. Through the Care Bill, it is seeking to reform the law relating to care and support for adults and the law relating to support for carers, and to take steps to safeguard adults from abuse or neglect.
Earlier in the year, the Chancellor also announced that the Government will put £3.8 billion into a pooled budget for health and social care in order to deliver better services to older and disabled people. This includes providing an additional £2 billion through the NHS to be used by local health and care systems, in addition to the transfer to local authorities for social care over the Spending Review 2010 period which will reach around £1 billion by 2014-15.
